Raising A Dane
Dane’s are relatively laid back dogs that don’t require a tremendous amount of exercise, actually they don’t need anymore than 15 minutes a day (especially before the age of 12 months). The only real concern with raising a Dane is the feeding requirements. A Dane grows very quickly so you have to be careful what & how much you feed them. While their bones are developing you must be conscious about how much protein, fat and calcium they consume as feeding incorrectly can cause problems with there rapidly growing bones, if you are lucky enough to purchase one of our dogs then I give out an information pack on what you need to know with having one of our Dane’s.
The other issue is finding a soft bed large enough to fit an adult Dane. They are very heavy dogs and if they don’t have a soft bed then lying down on a hard surface could do damage. Our dogs are house dogs and I know that wont appeal to everyone but a Dane must be kept close to the family (like on a verandah were the family might spend a lot of time). Dane’s crave companionship and need to feel that they are part of a family otherwise you will have a big unhappy dog. They need a lot of family time otherwise they have the tendency to be destructive. If you feel you are not one to welcome a Dane into your family then maybe a Dane isn’t for you.
Dane’s only need to have a quick brush down once a week, this helps to remove any loose hair but mainly it is to keep there skin healthy. It is recommended that you only bath your dogs with soap once a month, the reason for this is soap strips away their natural essential oil that they need to keep their skin and coat healthy and shiny. Use soap free shampoo for the in between washes. Dane’s nails need to be cut regularly (once a fortnight minimum) as they grow very quick.
